This is what I heard from a woman who was watching the dogs play in the Dog Yard. She was standing outside of the fence. I was in the Dog Yard, keeping an eye on Jaime and Nacho. Somehow we got to talking.
She commented on how happy all the big dogs in the Yard looked and how she missed her own dog. Her family had a good size dog. It was some kind of retriever. I wish I remembered what it was but I don't.
Anyway the dog died a couple of years ago. He died on the first of August.
When the dog was with them, he would spend nights in the hallway right inside of the front door. Naturally the hallway always smelled of their dog.
The dog died and the dog smell in the doorway gradually began to fade. After six months or so, the odor was practically undetectable.
One day the next summer the woman passed through the hallway and the distinct smell of their dog was back. It was the unmistakable smell of their pet dog that had died a year before.
And of course it's the first of August that day.
